LIVE REVIEW: LUCKY LOVE AT WE LOVE GREEN FESTIVAL, PARIS 08/06/25
Lucky Love literally brought the sun with him on the We Love Green stage, this Sunday 8 June. The Parisian music festival has been known for being unlucky due to the rainy weather those past years; a malediction that seemed to have been lifted when this Freddy Mercury lookalike arrived, himself acknowledging that he brought the sun back, showing his own sunburned skin due to his recent holiday in the south of France.
We Love Green is THE French festival for the planet lovers - eco friendly in all aspects, you can find organic products and vegetarian food only, recyclable and reusable crockery, composting toilets and a particular care for renewable energy.
This year, the headliners were eclectic and made everyone ecstatic; from a mix of French rappers such as Tiakola and SDM, a very good electronic music choice with Gesaffelstein or Horsegiirl, to the Brat summer Charli XCX herself; there was something for everyone, and the festival was sold out on Saturday for the British pop queen.
Lucky Love, born Luc Bruyère, arrived on stage all in black, wearing an Adidas jorts, a sparkling see through top and shiny derbies. He kicked off with his song ‘Happier on my own’, followed by his pop tune ‘Lova’. The majority of his songs are in English, giving the audience a better chance to channel all the beauty of his lyrics.
Live, his group is composed of a drummer, an electric guitarist, a synth pianist as well as four back singers who all participated into creating a vibrant symphony of pop and electrifying sounds.
Lucky Love is not the kind of artist you can really put into a box. Although his voice could be at times reminded of Woodkid or even Anohni, the singer clearly has his own universe, made of poetry and ethereal beauty. His lyrics are deep, gut-wrenching, and all take their root into the universal feeling of love. The artist described himself as being a passionate but melancholic creature, who has been very unhappy in love. He then told the crowd that he is now happy, that his lover was amongst them and proceeded to dedicate him his new unreleased song.
Lucky Love rose to fame only very recently, during the Paralympics that took place in Paris last summer. The singer was diligently chosen to open the ball and took this opportunity to twitching his song ‘Masculinity’ into ‘My Ability’. The song, primarily questioning the limits and challenges of being a man in a patriarchal society, was turned into a tune about his own disability, having been born with only one arm.
Although being a big part of himself, his disability is not the only thing that defines the singer. Lucky has a large impact on the queer community as he used to be a drag queen for a cabaret, and now speaks up for the gay rights. At We Love Green, he asked everyone in the audience to close their eyes for a minute, as a sign of remembrance and gratefulness to all the gay people who endured and fought the aids pandemic. “I would not be here today if it wasn’t for them”, the singer uttered, making the crowd incredibly emotional.
Lucky Love is on tour all year round in France, and we hope for him to travel the French borders soon to get the recognition he deserves.
