NEWDAD RETURN WITH NEW SINGLE

Irish alt-rock trio NewDad made their return last night with the release of ‘Everything I Wanted’, which premiered on Huw Stephens’ BBC 6Music show. The track serves as the final preview of their eagerly awaited sophomore album, Altar, set for release on 19 September via Atlantic Records.

Written nearly two years ago, ‘Everything I Wanted’ became a creative turning point for frontwoman Julie Dawson, helping to shape the emotional core of the album and spotlighting one of its central themes. “This was the song that kind of set the tone for this album,” Dawson explains. “It’s basically about expectations versus reality. There’s this idea, I think we all fall victim to, that once we achieve something or get something we’ve always wanted that we’ll finally be happy – but that’s never the case. It’s always, what’s next, I want more. This job can get very hard, very fraught, and I guess I had anticipated doing the thing I love most as my job would be easier and more fulfilling than this. ‘Everything I Wanted’ is me coming to terms with that.”

The single’s artwork was created by Dublin-based, self-taught embroidery artist Domino Whisker, whose vivid, emotionally resonant tapestries explore themes of memory, healing, and hope - echoing the undercurrents of the song itself.

Following the cathartic punch of lead single ‘Roobosh’ and the wistful tenderness of its follow-up Pretty’, ‘Everything I Wanted’ lands with a quiet reckoning that threads through the heart of Altar. Written in the wake of the band’s relocation from Galway to London, the album grapples with themes of sacrifice and ambition, identity and survival. For frontwoman Julie Dawson, who still feels the pull of home each day, Altar is both a love letter to Galway and a document of the emotional cost of leaving it behind.
