AFI return today with their twelfth studio album, Silver Bleeds the Black Sun…, out now via Run For Cover Records. The record features the previously released singles ‘Behind the Clock’, ‘Holy Visions’, and ‘Ash Speck in a Green Eye’, the latter arriving just days before the full release.
For over three decades, AFI have thrived on reinvention. Each album has marked a deliberate evolution—sometimes radical, always fearless—ensuring the band never settles into one genre or leans too heavily on past triumphs. That restless creativity has both expanded and challenged their audience, building a legacy defined by bold artistic shifts. With Silver Bleeds the Black Sun…, AFI once again open a new chapter, one that even took the band by surprise.
The goal was singular: to craft a record steeped in mood, dreamlike, ethereal, and otherworldly. Leaning into influences long embedded in their DNA but rarely placed so boldly at the forefront, AFI created an album that feels suspended in time, familiar yet forward-looking, echoing the past while pushing into unexplored territory. The result is a work that is dark, stately, and hauntingly beautiful, quintessentially AFI, but unlike any incarnation before.
Frontman Davey Havok reflects: “‘Silver Bleeds the Black Sun…’ is a sonic manifestation of the struggle to reconcile existence in the godless, uncanny dystopia that is modern life.”
It is precisely this blend of fearless experimentation, reverence for their influences, and unwavering sense of identity that has allowed AFI to remain not only relevant but influential for over 30 years. From their raw early hardcore beginnings (‘Answer That’ and ‘Stay Fashionable’, ‘Very Proud of Ya’, ‘Shut Your Mouth’ and ‘Open Your Eyes’), through their gothic punk reinvention (‘Black Sails in the Sunset’, ‘The Art of Drowning’), to their mainstream breakthrough (Sing the Sorrow, Decemberunderground), and their shape-shifting alternative rock explorations (‘Crash Love’, ‘Burials’, ‘The Blood Album’, ‘Bodies’), AFI have continually redefined themselves while staying resolutely true to their vision.
To celebrate the release, AFI have embarked on a 24-date headline North American tour with special guest TR/ST.
