Alt-pop firebrand Alex Ray unleashes her most unhinged and cathartic track yet with the explosive new single ‘BOY YOU AIN’T,’ followed by a music video premiere on August 8.
A genre-defying blend of trap-infused beats and rock grit, the track marks a fearless step in Ray’s ever-evolving artistry. Co-written with saywhen and Spencer Scardina of SAINT CLOUD, ‘BOY YOU AIN’T’ is a raw, rage-fueled takedown wrapped in savage lyricism and Ray’s trademark no-holds-barred authenticity.
Born from the wreckage of a toxic situationship, the track captures that pivotal moment of clarity when illusion gives way to anger. "I had just gone through this breakup and was just so, so angry and felt so used," Ray shares. What began as heartbreak quickly twisted into fury - fuel for a track that hits like a punch to the chest. In a writing session that doubled as a therapy appointment, Ray poured out the details of the relationship while saywhen and Scardina sharpened her most cutting observations into lyrical daggers.
Musically, ‘BOY YOU AIN’T’ exemplifies Ray’s refusal to be boxed in. Trap percussion collides with rock energy and alt-pop chaos to form a sound that’s aggressive, addictive, and entirely her own. "BYA highlights really how diverse my sound is becoming," Ray explains. "I don't like staying in a genre lane, and my upcoming music is a mix of synth pop, rock, alt – and then we have these trap drums and percussion that I just love. I think BYA is so out of pocket soundwise and lyricwise, and it just really sets the stage for me being able to do whatever I want."
Ray envisions ‘BOY YOU AIN’T’ as the ultimate pre-game anthem: "I love the idea of a bunch of girls getting dressed in all black and sharing makeup and drinking like the world is ending and SHRIEKING about all of their terrible exes. This song is supposed to be cathartic and unhinged and kind of taboo."
