Renowned Irish group Kodaline have officially unveiled their latest single, ‘Back To Me’, serving as the newest track lifted from their upcoming fifth and final studio album, We Were Only Young, set for release on October 2nd via Concord.
Crafted as a beacon of solace for individuals navigating their darkest hours, the deeply moving ‘Back To Me’ opens with delicate piano chords alongside stripped-back vocals from frontman Steve Garrigan. “I should have called, I should have asked, I should have said that I was there,” he sings, followed by the poignant admission, “I would have stayed, I would have made more time if I only knew.”
Throughout the track, the lyrical narrative is steeped in profound grief alongside the sharp anxiety that time may have already run out. Yet as the arrangement gathers momentum with sweeping string sections and rich, layered vocal harmonies, Garrigan’s voice grows strong and resolute, offering the heartfelt plea: “You’ve got a whole lot of life left/ So don’t give up quite yet, come back to me.”
Reflecting on the deeper personal meaning behind the track, Steve shares: “‘Back to Me’ is about being there for someone who’s given up on themselves. I’ve been there before, on both sides. I hope this song inspires people to keep going and reminds them that they’re never truly alone.”
Their forthcoming LP We Were Only Young stands as a deeply reflective and hugely moving collection of work that explores central themes of personal evolution, human connection, enduring love, and emotional closure as the band turns their gaze toward an optimistic and bright path ahead.
Musically, We Were Only Young weaves a rich tapestry between exquisite ballads—ranging from the soft, soaring acoustic elements of ‘All I Ever Need Is You’ to the piano and gospel-infused ‘Learn To Lose’—and expansive pop anthems. These softer compositions share space with vibrant tracks such as ‘It’s Not Over’ and the rhythmically driving, harmony-focused ‘Get Me High’. Elsewhere, a triumphant folk bounce enlivens ‘Vultures’, seamlessly balancing the haunting, cavernous atmosphere that frames the album from start to finish. The record launches with the bold, brooding energy of ‘Who Will Save You Now’ and arrives at its conclusion with the uplifting yet solemn ‘The One For Me’.
The release of ‘Back To Me’ follows a sequence of previously shared singles that further highlight the remarkable scope and sincere songwriting at the heart of the project. These include ‘Without You’, written by Steve for his wife on their wedding day, as well as the album’s title track—a bittersweet reflection on cherished times paired with the mature understanding that the past cannot be revisited. Rich with fond nostalgia, the title track centers on laying old demons to rest while delivering a crucial, timely message of gratitude.
