Wet Leg celebrates Moisturiser at London’s Electric Ballroom for a night of sweaty indie and buckets of fun

Wet Leg shot to stardom immediately with their cheeky early singles ‘Chaise Longue’ and ‘Wet Dream’, followed by a #1 self-titled debut album, seemingly endless touring, a support slot with Harry Styles and a string of awards, including recognition from the GRAMMYs and BRITs.

After a short break, Wet Leg returned, now as a fully-formed band, and eager to get back to work once again. Their sophomore record, Moisturiser, was crafted intentionally to break expectations and serves as a sonic departure. It’s punchier, angrier and heavier in every way.

Before taking the record on the road, the band celebrated with two performances at London’s iconic Electric Ballroom (day and night), testing new material and throwing in fan favourites. We headed down to the Camden venue to catch all the action.

The evening kicked off dramatically with the lead single, ‘Catch These Fists’, as Rhian walked on stage, her fists held high, before the group charged into action. Despite being a smaller stage than they’re used to, particularly for a five-piece, they bounced around like it was an arena. It’s true, Wet Leg’s energy knows no bounds, and ‘Catch These Fists’ lives up to expectations in a live setting.

Following this, they powered through ‘Liquidise’ and ‘Oh No’ before reaching ‘Ur Mum’, the moment in every set which demands the audience to partake in the loudest scream of their life. Newer tracks ‘Pillow Talk’ and ‘Davina McCall’ soared live, the latter fit in as a moment to breathe in an otherwise jam-packed set of indie hits.

“Let’s have a show of hands, who was here at our first gig? And who was here when we did a headline show here a while back?” Rhian asked the crowd as she received loud applause.

Despite their now well-oiled performance tactics, the band still found time to poke fun at themselves and embrace humility, occasionally laughing and having a good time. This spirit is what made people fall in love with the group initially, right back at the start.

By song #10, the glorious bass introducing ‘Chaise Longue’ engulfed the ballroom. It’s not an overstatement to say this is, and will be, a timeless indie track for decades to come. In this space, tightly squeezed, it feels better than ever. London knew every word, screaming back on command and bouncing to reach the ceiling during every chorus.

‘CPR’ closed the night, which is the Moisturiser album opener. While initially feeling bold not closing with ‘Chaise Longue’, the move pays off in their attempt at keeping their shows fresh. The riff-heavy rock single feels right at home as a set closer and leaves the audience buzzing.

Wet Leg are very much back, seem more confident than ever, and if this set is anything to go by, they’re more than ready to take Moisturiser across the world.
