Canadian heavy music trailblazers KITTIE are commemorating the 25th anniversary of their gold-certified debut album with the release of Spit XXV - a four-track EP that reimagines some of their most iconic songs. Set for release on 19 September via Sumerian Records, the EP features newly recorded and updated versions of fan favorites: ‘Brackish,’ ‘Charlotte,’ ‘Do You Think I’m A Whore,’ and the title track ‘Spit.’
Returning to the roots of their legacy, Spit XXV was produced by Garth Richardson, the same producer behind the original 1999 Spit sessions at EMAC Studios. This new chapter offers a powerful reflection on the band’s history while showcasing their continued evolution.
The reimagined version of the title track, ‘Spit XXV,’ is available today on all streaming platforms.
Speaking on the significance of the release, vocalist/guitarist Morgan Lander shares: "It's hard to believe that 25 years after its release, and almost 30 years since KITTIE began, people are still talking about Spit. There is something truly unexplainable in why our debut album is still resonating with people, finding a new audience and has had such a lasting impact on so many. Reimagining some of these classic songs for the 25th anniversary of 'Spit' was a lot of fun and a true testament to their longevity. It reveals just how relevant in the musical landscape they still are today. We were honoured to work with Garth again where it all began after more than two decades, and doing so was a cool way to pay homage to the past while updating these songs with a modern sound, bringing them into the future."
Originally released on 11 January 2000, KITTIE’s debut full-length album Spit catapulted the band from four Canadian teenagers into international metal powerhouses. Certified gold in the U.S. with over 660,000 sales, Spit was a groundbreaking moment for women in heavy music. With its ferocious sound and uncompromising attitude, the album shattered expectations and proved that a female-fronted metal band could achieve both critical acclaim and commercial success - right in the middle of nu-metal’s overwhelmingly male-dominated peak.
The cultural impact of Spit continues to resonate. In 2023, Rolling Stone ranked its title track at #82 on the 100 Greatest Heavy Metal Songs of All Time, cementing its place in the genre’s canon. Its influence spans generations, inspiring artists like Serena Cherry of Svalbard - who called the record “the reason she became a metal musician” - and prompting a 2023 cover of “Spit” by experimental artist Poppy.
The upcoming Spit XXV EP arrives as KITTIE enters a bold new chapter, following the release of 2024’s Fire - their first new album in 13 years. Fire received widespread acclaim, reaching #13 on the UK Rock & Metal Albums chart and #20 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales. Its lead single, ‘We Are Shadows,’ became KITTIE’s highest-charting track to date on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Airplay chart, landing at #20. The album also earned the band a 2025 Juno Award nomination for Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year, reaffirming their creative vitality and continued evolution.
Since returning from hiatus in 2022, KITTIE has experienced a major resurgence. With over 784,000 monthly listenerson Spotify, they’re reaching both longtime fans and new audiences discovering their legacy through streaming and social media. Their commanding performances at high-profile festivals like Sick New World, Welcome to Rockville, and Sonic Temple have reaffirmed their live power, while their successful 2024 North American headline tour proved their enduring ability to dominate stages on their own terms.
